Is Cool Air Making You Sick? The Hidden Science of Indoor Air

Today, we’ll look at how to use air conditioners and dehumidifiers wisely, so our indoor air can feel pleasant and support better breathing. During hot and humid weather, they can make homes feel much more pleasant. But you may have noticed something interesting too. After staying in an air-conditioned room for a long time, the air can sometimes start to feel overly dry. That’s because air conditioners remove moisture as they cool the air. When indoor air becomes too dry, some people may experience dry eyes or skin, a sore throat, a stuffy nose, coughing, or breathing discomfort. Very cold air may also irritate sensitive airways in some. That’s why it helps to avoid setting the temperature extremely low for long periods of time. Rooms that are too cold can sometimes feel arid and uncomfortable. It is also a good idea not to aim strong cold airflow directly at your face or body for hours, especially while sleeping. Small adjustments, like using a moderate temperature and allowing gentle airflow, can often make indoor spaces feel easier to relax in.

Another important part of healthy indoor air is keeping air conditioners clean. If you haven’t cleaned your air conditioner for a while, this might be a good reminder to check the air filters. Cleaning or replacing filters regularly, based on the manufacturer’s instructions, can help the system work better and keep dust from settling inside. It’s also a good idea to have your air conditioner checked and cleaned professionally once a year to help keep it running properly, efficiently, and safely.

Besides controlling temperature and humidity, ventilation and filtration also play an important role in indoor air quality. Homes need good airflow too. When indoor air stays trapped for too long, rooms can start to feel stale, while dust, odors, moisture, and pollutants slowly collect in the air.

Parts of Northern Europe, Canada, and some regions of the United States are known to have higher radon risk areas. However, radon levels can vary a lot, even neighboring houses may have completely different readings. But there are simple ways families can reduce risk. Improving ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate, sealing major foundation cracks, and testing homes with an inexpensive radon test kit can reduce the risk. Long-term exposure to high radon levels has been linked to lung cancer, which is why learning about it and testing when needed can be an important step toward maintaining healthier indoor air.
