Here is a gardening tip for you today. Hügelkultur, meaning “mound culture,” is a traditional raised-bed gardening method that builds fertile soil by layering logs, branches, leaves, and other garden offcuts into a mound. This mimics how a forest floor naturally composts fallen wood and plant matter, however due to the design, this process can happen faster than in nature. To build a Hügelkultur bed, choose a sunny spot with good drainage. Dig a shallow trench about 30–45 cm deep and no more than 120 cm across so you can reach the center. Place the largest logs at the base, then layer smaller branches and twigs on top, avoiding slow-rotting or toxic woods. Add leaves, grass clippings, compost, and other organic material, watering each layer as you build. Finish by covering the mound with a layer of soil and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. As the wood decomposes, it forms air pockets that improve soil structure and drainage, while also acting like a sponge that stores water and releases it during dry periods. Nutrients are released gradually, feeding plants as the mound matures.

We bet you won’t be able to hold back a laugh when you hear today’s joke entitled “Chef of Complaints.”

Two longtime friends were catching up over coffee when the topic turned to husbands.

“Victor and I have been married for 25 years. And every single night, without fail, he has some complaint about the food.”

“Every night? That’s terrible. Doesn’t it drive you crazy?”

“Not at all.”

“You’re kidding. You must have the patience of a saint.”

“Please. Why would I argue? Plenty of people don’t like the food they cook.”

?!

And now we have a heartline in Italian, with multiple-language subtitles, from Ginevra in Italy
