Painter’s tape that has been left on for too long can sometimes peel away the paint when removed. This is more likely if the tape has been exposed to sunlight, heat, or was not designed for the surface or length of the job. To remove it safely, warm the tape gently with a hairdryer for a few seconds to soften the adhesive. Then slowly lift one edge and peel it back at about a 45-degree angle. If the tape is still difficult to remove, try pulling it closer to a 90-degree angle instead. Work in small sections, reheating as needed, and avoid overheating the surface. Choosing the right painter’s tape for your project from the start can also help ensure clean removal without damaging the paint.
