The Republic of Korea, a Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion laureate, donated 200 metric tons of rice valued at US$200,000 to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) of the Philippines to assist disadvantaged families in Metro Manila and neighboring areas impacted by the COVID-19 community quarantine. The locally produced rice will be distributed to 33,334 households in need, with each receiving six kilograms of rice. This donation is part of Korea’s “Stay Strong, Build Trust Together” global campaign of solidarity to overcome the pandemic. Korea also contributed 200 metric tons of rice to the Philippines in July 2020. Our warm gratitude, Korea, for your generosity to the people of the Philippines during this challenging time. Scientists discover fast radio burst within our galaxy.
An international group of scientists have discovered a repeating fast radio burst (FRB), which is a short, incredibly strong burst of radio waves of less than a few milliseconds. The energy they release in that short period of time can equal the amount the sun emits in almost 100 years. Scientists still do not know the exact cause of FRBs. This recent one, dubbed FRB 200428, shows strong evidence of having originated from within our galaxy and was also accompanied by x-ray radiation, which is unprecedented. The scientists think that the signal came from a neutron star with a very strong magnetic field, also known as a magnetar, about 30,000 light years from Earth. The calculations and observations were conducted using a range of satellites and ground based telescopes from around the world, with the discovery published in three independent studies in the peer-reviewed journal Nature. As this FRB is a repeater, researchers will be able to study it more easily. Such fascinating news, international scientists. Humanitarian efforts improved with NASA’s population modeling.
Models based partially on a method the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) used to monitor and count wild salmon can now be used by humanitarian organizations and governments to more precisely estimate remote human populations in need of assistance. The technique uses Earth observation data of aerial imagery, satellite data, building structures and environmental factors in difficult to access locations. Currently, Dr. Douglas Leasure from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, and team are assisting the Nigerian government in using the method to determine the number of polio vaccinations to allocate in areas where counting the number of people is difficult. Research shows that green play areas boost children’s immune system health.
Dr. Aki Sinkkonen of the Natural Resources Institute Finland, and a diverse team of scientists in areas such as ecology, urban planning and medicine, conducted a study in which the ground from a forest, including shrubs, berries and mosses, was installed in bare play locations of several daycare centers. Seventy-five children between three and five years old from 10 centers were monitored, some having the natural turf, and others without. After 28 days, tests showed that microbial diversity on the skin and in the intestines of the children playing in the natural turf had increased, in addition to improvements to their immune systems. Renowned former United States professional basketball player opens another health clinic.
Six-time NBA champion and philanthropist Michael Jordan has recently opened the second Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. The clinic has the same goal as the one opened in 2019, which is to provide access to primary and preventive health care to underinsured or uninsured individuals. The new family medical clinic is a 630-square-meter facility, with 12 patient exam rooms, space for physical therapy and an X-ray room. Moreover, the full-time services of a social worker will also be offered. The first clinic has treated more than 3,500 patients and has also been used to screen and test for COVID-19. Major supermarket chain Lidl in Switzerland has reported that they have seen demand for vegan and vegetarian substitute products such as yogurt, schnitzels and burgers double in the last year. The chain currently stocks 70 plant-based offerings and increases the range during certain times of the year. In addition, leading Swiss retailer Migros reported double digit growth since the beginning of 2020 among their vegetarian and vegan certified products, and discount supermarket chain Aldi Switzerland will join with the Swiss Vegan Association to expand its veg range. Way to go, Switzerland, on your fast-moving conversion to plant-based food, and all Swiss markets responding to the compassionate change. New app helps Istanbul care for its animal co-inhabitants.
Residents of Turkey’s most populous city now have a powerful new tool to help them care for the stray animals that live among them. The new app called SemtPati, which combines the words in Turkish for neighborhood and paw, was developed by Koç Sistem, a leading Turkish IT company, and encourages volunteers throughout the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality to enter homeless animals into its database. A profile for each animal is created that allows users to contribute photos, physical features and health information with the goal of promoting their care and adoption. The app has been officially endorsed by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, a Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion and Protection laureate, and was launched by Ipek Kıraç , passionate animal advocate and a member of the Board of Directors of Koç Holding, a major industrial conglomerate in Turkey.
