The current term “Kuilei” in Taiwan (Formosa) refers to marionettes controlled by strings. In southern Fujian and Taiwan (Formosa), we call this art form “Jiali theatre.” In ancient times, marionette theatre was a performance art in royal Chinese courts. This kind of performance could only be watched by emperors or foreign guests in royal courts. Later, it became popular among the common people.
