In today’s news, China completes delivery of emergency food assistance package for South Sudan. Dutch researchers develop bubble barriers to stop river plastic, Argentina’s fish-people rights ruling featured on Times Square billboard, US state of Arkansas awards more than US$1.7 million to pregnancy support organizations heroic boy in Australia rescues pup from high-rise building, US firm launches vegan vitamin D3 powder for supplements, and amid wildfire’s fury, bison-people in Community of Madrid, Spain reserve hold their ground.

And today, I have a tip for an easy, hands-off way to keep your garden gently and consistently watered. Give an old, unused garden hose a new purpose by turning it into a homemade soaker hose to provide gentle, consistent, deep watering over a relatively large area. Simply use a 1/4-inch (8-millimeter) drill bit to make evenly spaced holes about three inches (7.5 centimeters) apart along the length of the hose, making sure to drill through only one side. Screw a hose cap onto one end, then place the hose around the plants you want to water. Turn the tap on just enough for water to gently seep through the holes rather than spray out. For even better results, cover the hose with a few centimeters of mulch to help prevent evaporation and keep the moisture in the soil. It’s a simple way to reuse an old hose and save money on garden equipment.
