This unique composition in Sanskrit is in the form of short concise aphorisms divided in ten chapters. Many commentaries are written on it for elaborate explanation. It is recognized by all four Jain traditions as the earliest, most authoritative and comprehensive summary of Jain religion. It offers practical and ethical tools for living a restrained and tolerant, non-violent life. There are three jewels: Samyag Gyan – which is enlightened knowledge, Samyag Darshan – which is enlightened faith, and Samyag Charitra – which is enlightened conduct. Right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct together constitute the path to liberation.
